Dear Mr. Moynihan,

I am a concerned customer of Bank of America. I recently read a report indicating that BoA provided, last year, more than $25 Billion worth of bond issues, corporate loans, revolving credit facilities, share issues and shareholdings to at least 20 companies involved in the production of nuclear weapons.

Those companies include, among others:

  • Bechtel, which plays a key role in the research, design, development and production of the US nuclear arsenal;
  • General Dynamics, which produces the guidance systems for Trident nuclear missiles and provides other engineering support for those missiles;
  • Honeywell International, which produces 85 per cent of the non-nuclear components for US nuclear weapons;
  • Lockheed Martin, which produces and maintains the Minuteman III ICBMs.

The financing of these companies contributes to the build-up and modernization of nuclear arms at a time when the world has condemned and outlawed everything to do with these weapons.

The 2017 Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons prohibits the development, testing, production, manufacture, possession and stockpiling of nuclear weapons. It also specifically prohibits “assisting, encouraging or inducing, in any way, anyone to engage in any activity prohibited by the treaty.”

I am asking you to divest from these companies without delay, and bring the Bank of America into compliance with international law.

The support of your bank and other financial institutions will be crucial to the success of worldwide efforts to abolish nuclear weapons. I hope that you will assist rather than impede efforts to eliminate this ultimate threat to our future.

I want my savings to help secure my future and that of my family, not undermine it. Unless you can reassure me that you will no longer invest in nuclear weapons producers, I intend to move my funds elsewhere.

I look forward to your response to these concerns and am happy to share it with many others around the world who have similar concerns.

Yours sincerely,

[YOUR NAME],
Concerned Customer
