Dear Mr. Barnes,

I am a concerned customer of People’s United Bank. I recently read a report indicating that People’s United Financial provided, last year, more than $100 Million worth of corporate loans and revolving credit facilities to Orbital ATK. This company is involved in the production of nuclear weapons.

Orbital ATK:

  • Produces rocket propulsion systems for Trident II submarine launched ballistic missiles.
  • Is responsible for refurbishing all three solid propellant stages of the Minuteman III ICBM.
  • Is involved in the joint management and operation of the Y-12 National Security Complex in Tennessee and the Pantex Plant in Texas, where nuclear weapons are assembled.

The financing of Orbital ATK directly contributes to the build-up and modernization of nuclear arms at a time when the world has condemned and outlawed everything to do with these weapons.

The 2017 Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons prohibits the development, testing, production, manufacture, possession and stockpiling of nuclear weapons. It also specifically prohibits “assisting, encouraging or inducing, in any way, anyone to engage in any activity prohibited by the treaty.”

I am asking you to divest from this company without delay, to bring People’s United Bank into compliance with international law.

The support of your bank and other financial institutions will be crucial to the success of worldwide efforts to abolish nuclear weapons. I hope that you will assist rather than impede efforts to eliminate this ultimate threat to our future.

I want my savings to help secure my future and that of my family, not undermine it. Unless you can reassure me that you will no longer invest in nuclear weapons producers, I intend to move my funds elsewhere.

I look forward to your response to these concerns and am happy to share it with the many others in this area who have similar concerns.

Yours sincerely,

Concerned Customer
