The Board of NuclearBan.US is very happy to announce the appointment of Asha Asokan as the new Director of NuclearBan.US. She takes over from Timmon Wallis, who will now be Director of the Quaker Council for European Affairs in Brussels. Timmon and Vicki will join the Board of NuclearBan.US and remain very much involved in the campaign from their new base in Belgium.
Asha holds a Bachelor’s in Law (LLB) from Mahatma Gandhi University, India, and a Master’s degree in International Human Rights Law (LLM) from CUSAT, India. She worked for Nonviolent Peaceforce, implementing civilian protection and peacebuilding projects in South Sudan, and went on to work for the United Nations in South Sudan and then in New York.
In 2018, Asha received a Rotary Peace Fellowship to do a second Master’s Degree in International Development Policy at Duke University in North Carolina. She became active in the nuclear weapons issue through the Rotary Action Group for Peace, and from there joined the Board of Directors of Rotary E-Club for World Peace. Asha also co-chairs a Working Group on Conflict Prevention, Peacekeeping, and Peacemaking with Women of Color Advancing Peace and Security (WCAPS).
“Total elimination of nuclear weapons is the only option we have to prevent nuclear catastrophe,” says newly appointed NuclearBan.US Director Asha Asokan. “I am delighted to join NuclearBan.US and this campaign for the total elimination of nuclear weapons. I believe that we all have a moral, legal and social obligation to get rid of the world’s nuclear weapons. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) gives us a tool to do so, and we should utilize it.“
