Dear Sen. Brownsberger,

As my State Senator, I am asking you to support S.1555 A Resolve to Establish a Citizens Commission to research and recommend to the state legislature ways to better protect the citizens of Massachusetts from the existential threat of nuclear weapons.

I do not believe this is only a matter for the federal government but is something we must take seriously at all levels of government. Ongoing events in Ukraine, as well as the growing risks of a nuclear conflict with North Korea, the breakdown of negotiations with Iran and the sabre-rattling with China over Taiwan are all indications that nuclear weapons pose a far greater danger to all of us than we would like to imagine.

The Citizens’ Commission would do research and hold hearings with experts and local residents across the state. It would report back to the state government with recommendations for future legislation.

Even if other legislators don’t support the abolition of nuclear weapons, all this bill is asking for is a commission to look more carefully into this issue and report back to the state legislature. The Commission would cost Massachusetts taxpayers nothing, and it commits the state to nothing. We are asking for a real study instead of being ‘sent to study.’

Please ask Sen. Rodrigues as chair of the Senate Ways and Means Committee to bring this bill to the floor of the Senate for a vote as soon as possible, and please vote in favor of it!

Thanks for your help.

Yours,
