Dear Rep. Lee,

Thank you for signing the ICAN Legislative Pledge, which is a commitment to call for the US to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Thank you for also co-sponsoring the Norton Bill, H.R.2850 which calls on the US to do just that. The ongoing situation in Ukraine makes this issue all the more urgent, as does the renewal of nuclear testing by North Korea. Your voice is desperately needed to signal to your colleagues in Congress and to the rest of the world that the time has come for the elimination of all nuclear weapons.

As you know, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is a global people’s movement that won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for its work facilitating the groundbreaking Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The treaty was adopted by 122 countries at the UN in 2017, makes it illegal to develop, test, produce, manufacture, acquire, possess, stockpile, transfer, receive, use, or even threaten to use nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons have now been categorically rejected by the international community. The new Treaty puts these abhorrent weapons on the same legal footing as other indiscriminate and inhumane weapons, including biological weapons, chemical weapons, anti-personnel landmines and cluster munitions.

So far 89 nations have signed the Treaty and 60 nations have ratified it. It entered into force as binding law in the first 50 ratifying countries on January 22, 2021.

As you know, the US and other nuclear-armed countries boycotted the Treaty and declared that they have no intention of implementing it. However, we the people are calling on our elected representatives to support this Treaty and to work for the elimination of all nuclear weapons by signing the ICAN Pledge and supporting the Norton Bill.

The ICAN Pledge has already been signed by over 2,000 Legislators from over 30 countries. Eleven current members of the US Congress have signed the Pledge, and so far 8 of them have fulfilled their commitment by co-sponsoring the Norton Bill.

The time has come to eliminate these weapons once and for all – before they eliminate us. Please continue to show your leadership in moving us closer to a nuclear weapon free world.

Kind regards,
