May 7 Warheads to Windmills webinar: Breakout session Working with Mayors for Peace and municipalities – Jackie Cabasso

Mayors for Peace, founded in 1982 and led by the Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, is working for a world without nuclear weapons, safe and resilient cities, and a culture of peace, in which peace is a priority for every individual. As of May 1, Mayors for Peace has grown to 8,256 cities in 166 countries and regions, representing in total over one billion people, with 223 U.S. members. Mayor Frank Cownie of Des Moines Iowa is the U.S. Vice-President of Mayors for Peace. Mayors for Peace’s next membership goal is to reach 10,000 member cities as quickly as possible. Is your mayor a member?

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, was founded in 1990. Its global network includes more than 2500 local and regional governments in more than 125 countries committed to sustainable urban development. ICLEI also provides oversight for the Compact of Mayors, a global coalition of city leaders founded in 2016 to address climate change at the local level. The Compact now includes over 11,500 cities and local governments from 6 continents and 142 countries, also representing more than 1 billion people. Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie is also the President of ICLEI.

A resolution submitted by US members of Mayors for Peace, adopted last year by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, shows how these issues can be brought together. The resolution “calls on the Administration and Congress to rein in military and nuclear weapons spending, and to redirect funds to support safe and resilient cities and meet human needs, including by providing accessible and affordable health care for all, housing and food security, …. green sustainable energy, and environmental protection and mitigation; and to increase investment in international diplomacy, humanitarian assistance and development, and international cooperation to address the climate crisis.”
